What held Him there?
Brendan spoke this morning. He commented briefly on the lyrics of a “How deep the Father’s love for us”.
In the song there is a line “It was my sin that held Him there…”. Brendan argued that this line is incorrect, that our sin did not hold Jesus there, but it was His love for us.
When he ran this past me a few days ago I wasn’t really sure there was a difference. However, thinking about it on the way home today, there is.
To suggest that there is no difference means that God did not have a choice. It suggests that God had to die for our sins because there was no other way - but there was.
God could have scrapped the whole lot of us. He could have started again from scratch, but He gave us another chance. Out of love, He gave us another chance.
It will not stop me singing this song, but it’s an interesting view on it all the same. What do you think?

I agree that God had a choice and His choice was to send Jesus to die for us, and He was happy with this choice.
In Isaiah 53:10 we read that it pleased God to bruise Jesus, to take our sins, hurts, pains and griefs.
It wasn’t nails that held Jesus to the cross, it was the love of the Saviour and the Father.

thanks for the thoughts, snow. i guess i hadn’t thought about that in a while. Jesus had a choice of what to do. as i read your post, i thought of Christ in garden praying about what to do next. He sweats like drops of blood, asking the Father that God’s will be done, not His own. Christ hears what God wants and does it.
unbelievable strength. unbelievable.
cool blog by the way. i keep dropping by. you’ve made me think about some other things as well.

I know it was love that held Jesus on the cross. He said he freely gave all. I just sit and think about the people standing around telling him to come down off the cross and to prove himself. If Jesus was like most of us He would have came down to show his power to all the people, but His love kept him there he knew we would not make heaven without him so he indured all the suffering and pain for us. How great is His Love!

The name of the song already identifies that He went to the cross because of His love for us, but He wouldn’t have had to die because of His love. He had to die because of our sin. Christians talk so much about how much God loves us, and He does, but we forget about our sin and His wrath and how important it is to repent instead of make excuses for ourselves and cover it up with how much He loves us. When we sin, we nail Him to the cross all over again. I think that is what the song is saying. It wasn’t written to give us warm fuzzies about Jesus’ love for us.
