Set List 30-Sep-2007: Debrief

If the outpouring God’s Spirit could be measured by the percentage of my t-shirt soaked in perspiration, today was totally amazing.  However, we can’t measure it that way at all, can we?

How do you normally know if God moved in a big way?

  • The congregation goes crazy?
  • The worship leader prays during the set?
  • The pastor asks that you sing that song again?
  • Really good feedback afterwards?
  • You sweat a lot?
  • You felt the “buzz” of the Holy Spirit?

How do you know?

I felt this morning went very well.  I kept a check on the congregation and they seemed to be really enjoying it and entering into God’s presence.  Even the offering / kids-going-out didn’t seem to impact too much this week.  George said some nice things after the band had finished since it was my last time.

For me, the last three went down the best - God Of All Splendour, You Are God Alone, and Amazing Love.  I dropped The Wonderful Cross.

I think the key to You Are God Alone is to avoid too much repetition.  Keep an eye on the congregation, as sometimes they can tire a little from singing the chorus over and over.  You can usually tell by the look on their faces!

This evening was a different congregation who prefer older songs.  Of the set, the two favourites seemed to be What Can Wash Away My Sin and I Stand Amazed.   After the set was finished, several people were invited to sing.  I sang Don’t Let The Fire Die by Steven Curtis Chapman.  It seemed to be accepted very well - much better than the middle songs of the worship set!

How dare you sing Amazing Grace to a different tune!

I am with you on the perspiration. I was sweating insanely tonight. I generally bring two shirts (one for rehearsal - I even sweat like crazy then). Today, however, I forgot my extra shirt. Thus, total saturation of the clothing.

    Alistair,

Enjoyed worship yesterday morning. It was so good, especially Amazing Love. It was special and also I believe fitted in well with the stirring message that Melanie brought to us on being a compassionate people.

We are going to miss you Alistair.

Hi Alan, thanks for that. I enjoyed playing Amazing Love. George also mentioned to me that he liked that song. Think I’m going to miss LCF too. You can pray I get fitted in somewhere out in the states.

So wait…how do we know if God did move in a big way???
This is the thing I constantly ask around. I know how I felt but want to make sure I wasn’t the only one out there feeling it :)

    Hi Conner,

You’re right, as worship leaders we get that feeling that it went great. But it’s really no indication.

I’m sure you’ll have had times when you feel it went awful and then someone will come bouncing up at the end and tell you how great it was!

As worship leaders, our main concern should be being in tune with His Holy Spirit… if we do our job, He will do His.

If we start getting caught up with how buzz we can generate from week to week we’ll eventually blow up.

    How do I know?

Peace. I usually sense God’s peace.

“the percentage of my t-shirt soaked in perspiration”

Wow, thanks for the visual. lol

Yeah “God’s movement” can be an elusive metric to measure.

I would probably suggest we measure it in life change.

What stories are people from your church telling about how Jesus has changed their lives?

When people with changed lives worship the spirit moves.

    Thanks Bridget & Billy.
