NHC Set List - 15 Jun 2008

Sunday, June 15th, 2008
  • Here Is Our King - David Crowder Band
  • Let Me Sing - Todd Fields
  • Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) - Chris Tomlin
  • Another Hallelujah - Lincoln Brewster

Both services went great today.  We introduced a new song “Let Me Sing”.  I think Gary heard it at the Drive conference a month or so back.  It’s a great song and seemed to go down really well.

Jon Foreman: Instead Of A Show

Monday, June 9th, 2008

UPDATE: Head over here for a chance to win a copy of Jon Foreman’s Summer EP.
(Mud’s giveaway is over)

Mudpuppy mentioned this song today on Twitter and then sent me the video.  It’s a new song from Jon Foreman’s Summer EP.  The lyrics are based on a passage from Isaiah 1:11-17.  Check out the video and lyrics below and then discuss.

I hate all your show and pretense
The hypocrisy of your praise
The hypocrisy of your festivals
I hate all your show
Away with your noisy worship
Away with your noisy hymns
I stomp on my ears when you’re singing ‘em
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show

Your eyes are closed when you’re praying
You sing right along with the band
You shine up your shoes for services
There’s blood on your hands
You turned your back on the homeless
And the ones that don’t fit in your plan
Quit playing religion games
There’s blood on your hands

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

Let’s argue this out
If your sins are blood red
Let’s argue this out
You’ll be one of the clouds
Let’s argue this out
Quit fooling around
Give love to the ones who can’t love at all
Give hope to the ones who got no hope at all
Stand up for the ones who can’t stand at all, all
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

Christian Music News!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Rodney contacted me a couple of days back and asked if I would like to link to his blog stereotruth.net.  It’s a great site with regular updates on what’s happening right now on the music scene.

I like that the posts are so varied but still keep to the general theme and goal of the site.  Recent coverage of American Idol David Cook is good as well.

Here’s a snippet from their About page.

Stereotruth.net is the brainchild of Rodney Miller and Scott Dahlstrom.

Rodney brings a passion for great music, along with 15 years of radio experience focused for the last 5 years on the Christian radio industry.

Scott has been building websites and web-based applications for the past 10 years in Northern California. His employers and clients include small mom-and-pop businesses to Fortune 500 corporations.

Combining the love and knowledge of the web, along with the love and knowledge of Christian music and entertainment, the two partners have created what hopes to be a portal into that world. A one-stop shopping experience for your positive music.

I wish Rodney & Scott all the best with this venture.

I Will Possess Your Heart

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Dave has been doing a series recently about getting into God’s word.  As Christians we shouldn’t need to be told this, but we do.  I do.

Yesterday, Dave gave practical advice on how to study using the acronym SOAP.  To me that usually means Simple Object Access Protocol, but yesterday it got a new meaning - Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer.

Scripture: I need to be reading and writing out Scripture as it speaks to me.
Observation: I need to study and observe the who, what, when, why and make a note of any questions I might have.
Application: I need to think about how I can apply these new truths to my everyday life.
Prayer: And I need to pray that God will help me do so.

I have kept a bible study journal before, but I need to be more consistent.  I need to work it in to my daily routine.  Today as I drove to work I was listening to a new album (Narrow Stairs by Death Cab For Cutie) and the first song, I Will Possess Your Heart contains the following lyric.

You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find, love
I will possess your heart

Video: Holy Is The Lord (Chris Tomlin)

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I don’t normally do requests, mainly because I already have a list of songs in my head that I want to do and don’t even have time to do those!  HollisBoy92 over at YouTube requested this the other day and I managed to squeeze it in during my (now routine) Sunday night* recording slot!

*My wife watches Desperate Housewives followed by Brothers and Sisters - so I get two whole hours of guilt-free play time!  Rock & Roll!   ;-)

As I mentioned in the previous post, video quality is not great.  I’m currently experimenting with different software packages and video capture methods.

Video: Cannons (Phil Wickham)

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I found Phil’s Cannon lesson the other day and loved the song.  This is a great worship song and I’d love to play it at church.  I think it would go down a treat.

Phil’s Blog: http://www.philwickham.com/blog

I used Vegas to capture the video (Logitech Pro 9000) and audio (Samson CO3U) for this.  As you can see, the video framerate is not great, and slightly out of sync.  I need to tweak some settings.  The second video (Holy Is The Lord) I’ll be putting up in a second suffers even worse.

Phil Wickham Video: Cannons Lesson

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I love it when artists do videos like this.  Here Phil is teaching us how to play Cannons which is a great worship song.  I can’t believe I have not bought this man’s album yet.

(Update: My cover here)

Lyrics
It’s falling from the clouds
A strange and lovely sound
I hear it in the thunder and rain
It’s ringing in the skies
Like cannons in the night
The music of the universe plays

You are holy great and mighty
The moon and the stars declare who You are
I’m so unworthy, but still You love me
Forever my heart will sing of how great You are

Beautiful and free
Song of Galaxies
It’s reaching far beyond the milky way
Lets join in with the sound
C’mon let’s sing it loud
As the music of the universe plays

All glory, honor, power is Yours amen
All glory, honor, power is Yours amen
All glory, honor, power is Yours forever amen

Video: Come Thou Fount @ NHC

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Here’s the video of Come Thou Fount from NHC, 04 May 2008.

[youtube url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5g41OEFUS4]

I’d been trying all week to pull this footage from DVD and put it on YouTube, but Adobe Premiere (Elements) was giving me jip.

I downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas 8 Platinum and give it a whirl.  You are supposed to be able to import straight from the DVD, but that didn’t work for me.  Apparently the DVD needs to be finalized for that to work - I don’t know if our church DVDs are or not.

So, I loaded up Super and converted the VOB to Mpeg2 and brought the Mpeg2 into Vegas.  I’d tried this step already in Premiere with unsatisfactory results, but it worked a treat in Vegas.  I cut the section I needed, added title, fades and rendered it to Windows Media 9 format for upload to YouTube.

I found a great YouTube channel (guerillabill) with loads of Vegas how-to videos.  I used tips from this video to customize the render for YouTube - except I kept the output size to 640×480 instead of the suggested 320×240.

I have to say, I was impressed by the final file size and quality of the Windows Media 9 file.  I normally use xvid/divx to keep the files under 100mb.  The Windows Media 9 file that I uploaded to YouTube was 28mb!

(There’s a $30 mail-in rebate offer available on Amazon for Vegas 8 until the end of May.  I ordered my copy this morning!)
