Isaiah 12

Friday, August 1st, 2008

1 In that day you will say:
“I will praise you, O LORD.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away
and you have comforted me.

2 Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.”

3 With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.

4 In that day you will say:
Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;
make known among the nations what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.

5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things;
let this be known to all the world.

6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

I’m trying to grasp the magnitude of God’s unfailing love….. Yeah, I know - I don’t think that will be possible.

Jon Foreman: Instead Of A Show

UPDATE: Head over here for a chance to win a copy of Jon Foreman’s Summer EP.
(Mud’s giveaway is over)

Mudpuppy mentioned this song today on Twitter and then sent me the video.  It’s a new song from Jon Foreman’s Summer EP.  The lyrics are based on a passage from Isaiah 1:11-17.  Check out the video and lyrics below and then discuss.

I hate all your show and pretense
The hypocrisy of your praise
The hypocrisy of your festivals
I hate all your show
Away with your noisy worship
Away with your noisy hymns
I stomp on my ears when you’re singing ‘em
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show

Your eyes are closed when you’re praying
You sing right along with the band
You shine up your shoes for services
There’s blood on your hands
You turned your back on the homeless
And the ones that don’t fit in your plan
Quit playing religion games
There’s blood on your hands

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

Let’s argue this out
If your sins are blood red
Let’s argue this out
You’ll be one of the clouds
Let’s argue this out
Quit fooling around
Give love to the ones who can’t love at all
Give hope to the ones who got no hope at all
Stand up for the ones who can’t stand at all, all
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

Psalm 40

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

I just thought I’d share something quick.

When leading worship, the talkie bits are something I’ve always felt lame at.  Therefore I don’t usually say too much at all.

In saying this, I don’t think worship leaders should get up there and talk too much either, but sometimes it’s good to say something to set up a song, or a simple prayer while the band get themselves organized for the next song.

Anyway, I’m leading tomorrow for the first time in six/seven months and I’ve been thinking off and on about what I will say.  I know Gary is preaching on Trusting in God tomorrow, but it’s too cheesy to get up there and rhyme off something along those lines.

The funny thing is, my reading plan today brought me stumbling into Psalm 40.

Verse 4 says, Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! (ESV)

And verse 5 says, You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.” (ESV)

I like verse 5 better written like this, Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; And Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.” (NKJV)

So, I think to start off tomorrow I will attempt to encourage people to worship God by working in “Oh God, Many are Your wonderful works…” somewhere in my short prayer.  Who knows though, I could say something entirely different!  ;-)
Do you think through your talkie bits beforehand, or just wing it?

I Will Possess Your Heart

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Dave has been doing a series recently about getting into God’s word.  As Christians we shouldn’t need to be told this, but we do.  I do.

Yesterday, Dave gave practical advice on how to study using the acronym SOAP.  To me that usually means Simple Object Access Protocol, but yesterday it got a new meaning - Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer.

Scripture: I need to be reading and writing out Scripture as it speaks to me.
Observation: I need to study and observe the who, what, when, why and make a note of any questions I might have.
Application: I need to think about how I can apply these new truths to my everyday life.
Prayer: And I need to pray that God will help me do so.

I have kept a bible study journal before, but I need to be more consistent.  I need to work it in to my daily routine.  Today as I drove to work I was listening to a new album (Narrow Stairs by Death Cab For Cutie) and the first song, I Will Possess Your Heart contains the following lyric.

You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find, love
I will possess your heart

Sunday Preparation

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Sometimes we think it’s only the preacher or the band that needs to prepare for a Sunday.

I’ve been reading LIFESTORIES by Mark Hall (Casting Crowns) recently and came across this little nugget the other day.

“When I’m not living for Jesus daily and show up at church after squeezing out life on my own terms all week, I’m needy when I walk through the doors.

  • I need the greeter to make me feel welcome.
  • I need my friends to sit by me.
  • I need my soloist  to sing my favourite song.
  • I need the pastor to be engaging.
  • I need the small group leader to love on me and do cartwheels when I enter.
  • I need the small group leader to call me when I’m sick.

I am so needy because I’m not complete when I get there, and when I’m not being completed by my walk with Jesus, I unwittingly demand completeness from people.  I raise the bar of expectations, and people don’t meet my needs because it is impossible for people to do so.”

Mark then goes on to contrast that to walking daily with Jesus.

“When I faithfully pursue God, spending time with Him in Bible study and a spirit of unceasing prayer, then I’m completed by Him.  He indeed is all I need.

When I walk into church, I see people like He sees them.  In other words, I recognize and acknowledge that I’m an instrument.  I walk in and want to sit by others as a ministry.  I want to help greet visitors.  I want to make sure somebody called those who were sick.  Why?  Because a life of praise comes from understanding that this life is not about us.  It’s about something bigger than us.  It’s about loving God and loving others, the two greatest commandments.”

Dave said something along the same lines this morning at church.  He encouraged us to pray before we get to church that we would hear what God would want us to hear.

Is God saying something to me through all this, or did He just want to give me something to blog about? ;-)
Challenge: Pray and seek God daily and next time you do church (note: doesn’t have to be a Sunday) - come with expectancy in your heart and tell me it doesn’t make a difference.

Bible Journey - Colossians Chapter 2

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

1-5: Paul worked really hard to keep encouraging believers to stay focused.  We need to remain in God so we are not deceived by false teachings.  All knowledge and wisdom are in God.

6-7: Be thankful IN everything!

8: We must be able to disern false teachings.  “Hollow” is the key word in this verse.

9: Jesus has made us complete!  His power extends over everything - no exceptions.

10: Jesus is Lord of ALL.

11-12: Circumcision no longer required by the New Testament church.  Is baptism the New Testament equivalent of circumcision?

13: We were dead in sin - God, through Jesus, has made us ALIVE!

14: We are no longer in debt to God.  Jesus’ sacrifice has freed us!

15: When Jesus died on the cross he made a complete spectacle of the devil and his minions!  ;-)
16-17: Don’t get bogged down arguing with other believer’s over insignificant things - keep focused on God!

18-19: Beware of bluffers.  There are plenty of them about!

20-21: God is more interested in the state of our heart, rather than outward rituals and traditions.

22-23: It’s a good idea to keep evaluating our traditions and rituals.  Do they still hold meaning?  Why do we do them?

Start Living It!

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

My counsel for you is simple and straightforward: Just go ahead with what you’ve been given. You received Christ Jesus, the Master; now live him. You’re deeply rooted in him. You’re well constructed upon him. You know your way around the faith. Now do what you’ve been taught. School’s out; quit studying the subject and start living it! And let your living spill over into thanksgiving.

Focused On The Goal - Part 2

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

I think I know why I was lead to that passage now.  The last few days have been a nightmare.  So much to do, to think about, that my head feels like it might explode.  Change can be such a horrible thing.  It can turn your life, everything you know, upside down.

I was driving home today with a million issues going through my mind.  My thoughts drifted back to the passage.  Look through all this - in a couple of weeks it will all be forgotten!  Sometimes change is difficult, but keep focused on the goal and as Delirious have been telling me - Everything little thing will be OK.

We leave for the States on Oct 19.
